One of my favorite festivals in our area is the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival, which began in 1976…and I actually attended!
It was just a small festival with some local food vendors, bands, and artists and a whole lot of fun. As time passed the word got out and the festival began to grow and is now one of the South’s most celebrated events.
People come from all around to enjoy the awesome food and listen to lots of great music. The one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the down home neighborly feel that caters to families.
There are some families that have continued to come every year and set up in the same spots and wait for the rest of their friends to eventually show up. It is like a huge family reunion of family and friends.
This year the festival kicks off on Friday, October 18, 2013, at 11:00 AM and ends on Sunday evening.
Admission is $10 on Friday and Sunday, and on Saturday until 5:00 PM. After that, the price goes up to $15. Children age 11 and under are admitted free.
Entertainment
Vince Gill is the main headliner and is scheduled to perform on Sunday at 6:00 PM. If you can’t make that don’t worry, the entire weekend is filled with performers beginning Friday at 5:30 PM and all day Saturday.
Acts include:
- Justin Moore – (Oct. 18)
- Thompson Square – (Oct. 19)
- Blackjack Billy – (Oct. 20)
- Ben Portsmouth and the Taking Care of Elvis Band
- The Isaacs
- The Swon Brothers – (Oct. 19)
- Tayo Reed Explosion
- Doctor Zarr’s Amazing Funkmonster
- Parker Willingham
- Jonathan Gunger (Author, signing books)
Food
Along with the featured fish, Mullet, in a variety of forms, there is a smorgasbord of choices:
- BBQ shrimp
- Crawfish bread
- Alligator on a stick
- Hamburgers
- Corn dogs
- Funnel cakes
For the kids there are clowns, carnival rides, games, magicians and you may even see a few super heros.
I loved bringing my sons when they were little and over the years they have enjoyed going with their friends.
It has been a few years since I attended but it is on my calendar this year and I hope to see you there!
