Do you remember your first trip to the Zoo?
Did your parents take you or was it on a field trip?
Can you remember the wonderment at finally seeing all those animals from books in person?
Having grown up in a military family we were often stationed in areas where there were no zoos, but when my father working on his Master’s degree at USC in California and I remember going to the Los Angeles Zoo. What a treat!
Here along the Emerald Coast we are blessed to have the wonderful Gulf Breeze Zoo located on Highway 98.
I used to take my sons there when they were little and enjoyed watching their excitement. Now I am a grandmother and get to experience the added joy of watching my two grandsons squeal when they see a giraffe or the monkeys.
This past Sunday afternoon my entire family went to the Boo at the Zoo where local businesses had kiosks scattered around the Zoo and the children came dressed in their Halloween costumes and were able to “trick or treat”.
It was a fabulous time for kids of ALL ages. There was an area in the middle of the Zoo that had the inflatable giant slides and bouncy houses and kids could even have their face painted to look like one of the animals.
My oldest grandson loves going in the bird exhibit where you get these sticks with bird seed on them and these gorgeous birds fly and land on the stick and nibble away.
One even got on his pirate hat which delighted him!
I even got in on the actions and at one time had two birds fussing with each other about my stick. It was a remarkable experience to share with my grandson and enjoy these birds so closely.
In December, the Zoo opens up at night and you can walk through and see some wonderful lighted decorations and light shows. This is one of the Zoo’s most popular events and one we will be looking forward to again this year.
